ACO press conference: Future milestones and 2025 WEC calendar revealed

During the customary Friday press briefing, Pierre Fillon, Executive President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), addressed the media at the annual ACO press conference. This event serves as a platform to unveil forthcoming milestones in endurance racing, particularly within the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Key announcements in the ACO press conference, just after Kévin Estre’s pole position for the 2024 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, included updates on racing car categories, ACO initiatives, and the FIA WEC calendar:

ACO renews partnership with Motul

Motul, the French lubricant manufacturer and official supplier of racing fluids for prestigious events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 24h Moto, and FIA WEC, has reaffirmed its commitment to the Automobile Club de l’Ouest.

Next generation of LMP2 expected in 2028

The introduction of new LMP2 regulations, featuring new engines and lighter chassis designs, has been postponed to 2028. The current generation, exemplified by the Oreca 07 introduced in 2017, will continue to compete in series such as IMSA, ALMS, and ELMS for the next 3.5 seasons, excluding WEC (still participating in the 24 Hours of Le Mans).

Hypercar regulations maintained until 2029

Initially slated to conclude in 2027, the existing Hypercar regulations have garnered participation from up to 12 manufacturers and significant fan engagement. As a result, the ACO has officially extended these regulations until 2029, along with granting two additional development tokens.

Starting in 2025, manufacturers participating in the FIA WEC must enter a minimum of two cars, confirming recent speculation within the paddock.

Following hypercar announcements, Aston Martin has officialized the enter of two Valkyries AMR-LMH in collaboration with the Heart of Racing team.

FIA WEC calendar finalized with expanded grid to 40 cars

The FIA WEC calendar has been finalized, featuring an expanded grid capacity from 37 to 40 cars. This increase aims to enhance competition and provide fans with an elevated spectacle during races.

ACO press conference: Hydrogen powered cars in 2028

Highlighting ACO and FIA WEC’s forward-thinking approach, a significant technology on the horizon is hydrogen powered cars. Initially projected for 2026, it is officially delayed to 2028. These cars will store hydrogen in liquid form within tanks, better suited for racing cars. Specific technical regulations for hydrogen-powered vehicles will be presented to the FIA later this year by the ACO.
