The new 727 HP BMW M5 is heavier than ever

50 years after the debut of the iconic BMW M5 E28, BMW introduces the 2024 BMW M5, a contemporary interpretation of the ultimate sports saloon. Combining classic performance with modern electrification, the new M5 PHEV aims to redefine the segment, by taking risks.

An electrified powertrain

The BMW M5 G90 features the M Hybrid drive system, pairing previous generation’s 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with an integrated electric motor in the 8-speed ZF8 gearbox. The V8 engine produces 585 HP and 750 Nm of torque, available from 1,000 to 5,000 RPM. The electric motor adds 197 HP, with a pre-gearing stage enhancing its effective torque to 450 Nm.

Combined, the internal combustion engine and the electric motor develop 727 HP and 1000 Nm of torque.

The 18.6 kWh battery supports an electric range of 67-69 km (42-43 miles) on the WLTP cycle, suitable for everyday driving and fuel savings.

The M5’s top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), extendable to 305 km/h (189 mph) with the optional M Driver’s Package. The sports exhaust system offers an engaging engine note, while BMW IconicSounds Electric should provide a distinct sound in electric mode. The M5 can reach speeds up to 140 km/h (87 mph) in all-electric mode.

Power is distributed via the four wheels, featuring a rear-biased setup in 4WD Sport mode and a 2WD mode for purists. Keep calm and breathe, it is still possible to make donuts.

The BMW M5 colossal weight gain

With actual technology, electrification rimes with weight. And BMW did it quite frankly with the G90. Compared to the previous generation, the 2024 BMW M5 is 500 kg heavier, totalizing 2,510 kg.

This huge weight gain, mainly due to the addition of the electric motor, the 18.6 kWh battery, intervers and other peripherials, is also explained by new chassis features.

Such as the 4-wheel steer system, which steers the rear wheels by up to 1.5 degrees to improve handling, high-speed stability or manoeuvers. Or the standard adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers.

The chassis of the new M5 features a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle, both with bespoke kinematics and elastokinematics.

The BMW M5 driving experience

Standard equipment now offers advanced automated driving features, including front collision warning and Lane Departure Warning, with optional Active Cruise Control and Active Navigation. The Parking Assistant Professional allows remote-controlled parking.

The center console’s Setup button customizes drive settings, while M Dynamic Mode and M Mode adjust DSC and driver assistance for sporty driving. The M Hybrid system offers HYBRID, ELECTRIC, and eCONTROL modes.

2024 BMW M5 Interior

The M5 includes a flat-bottomed steering wheel, multifunction seats, and BMW Curved Display. Standard features include Merino leather trim, four-zone air conditioning, and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, with optional performance and comfort upgrades available.
