With “Vision Gran Turismo”, Kazunori Yamauchi, producer of the Gran Turismo series, asked the world’s leading automotive manufacturers and design studios to imagine a concept model which would give an insight to where automotive is going. Each and every concept developed will be integrated into the new Gran Turismo 6 Playstation game. Mercedes-Benz in partnership with their motorsport and racing department AMG, has just revealed their Vision Gran Turismo Concept in Sunnyvale (California, USA), with a public presentation planned at Los Angeles Motorshow. Just look at it… Doesn’t it look stunning ? Isn’t it intriguingly beautiful ? Yet it seems long but incredibly well balanced. Wouldn’t you want this Vision Gran Turismo Concept to be the SLS replacement ? Because I dream of it. In the game, it will have the usual 5,5 litre turbocharged V8 with 585 horsepower. Designed Mercedes Benz’s design centers of Sindelfingen and Carlsbad for the exterior and Como for the interior, it has every breed of the usual grand tourers from the Stuttgart’s brand. It’s so beautiful indeed that I don’t really know how to describe it nor where to start… I think the best way is just to look at the whole car, and make your own opinion.

This car remembers me of the great Citroën GT Concept, presented for Gran Turismo 5. It makes me feel the same, … Like the 13 year old child I was discovering the Maserati 75th Birdcage. It’s very different of course from the Citroen as the french car was a rear engine car, and the german car is a typical grand tourer that only Mercedes knows how to build. But I think that in both cases, the philosophy is the same. For the first time, designers were really free to realize what they dreamt, and realize what they wanted. No marketing constraints, no stress about having to build a car for some useful purpose. Just form, no function. Indeed the only function these car will have is making us dream of them while we play to Gran Turismo.

So basically this is the second proof that starting the design process with nothing more in mind than the consumer’s dreams gives amazing results. Now the second phase is getting these concept cars from the virtual games to the reality, in which Citroen has failed. I sincerely hope that Mercedes will succeed in this step and that one day we will be able to see the Gran Turismo Vision stumblung accross our roads.
