Definitely part of the family
There is little doubt that the Tonale is faithful to the concept car. Besides, it looks distinctive and metropolitan, just like an Alfa Romeo. The “3+3” headlights make us remember of the Alfa Romeo SZ design, – which is dividing but still special – the famous “Trilobo” grill is still completing the bonnet, the Alfa Romeo logo is correctly set, “telephone dial” wheels are on and here we go. A new Alfa Romeo. And it simply works, because the Centro Stile (Style HQ) people just do the job. Of course, it can be better, just like in the Frank Stephenson days (Alfa Romeo 8C, Mito) but, only a few artists can do it better.

Connectivity, ADAS, and NFT: the Tonale is catching up and overtaking
Alfa Romeo’s communication mainly focuses on connectivity and new technologies. Automated driver assistance systems (ADAS), like a level 2 autonomous driving system (including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering and Trafic Jam Assist and many others), emphasize the big step Alfa Romeo is willing to take. Nowadays, carmakers see ADAS as the big thing a customer will be paying attention to in the following years.
However, these systems are key features in security ratings in official assessment programs such as EuroNCAP in Europe or IIHS in the US. To keep it simple, it’s a way to get a 5-star rating. Of course, these systems are laborious to build and set-up, but it might result in a good impression from the customer and such entities. And obviously make Knight Rider kids happy.

Speaking of Mickael Knight, the Tonale will be using Amazon Alexa as a voice assistant, that allows owners to have their packages delivered directly into their cars. Just unlock the doors and let the courier leave them inside the car, safely. This feature might have its number of mishaps.
Moreover, Alfa Romeo is the very first carmaker to use NFTs. Geek brands, such as Tesla (hi Elon), didn’t put a step in it yet. To those who don’t know what a NFT is, it is a cryptocurrency based digital Non-Fungible Token (unique), which has many uses. For the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale case, it is used as an inviolable certification: it will record vehicle data, generating a certificate that can be used as a guarantee of the car overall status. To sum it up, NFTs will add reassurance to second-hand buyers.
Inside the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale
Greatly inspired from its siblings (Giulia and Stelvio), the interior of the Tonale is minimalistic, driver focused and is a great introduction to “looking sharp” interiors. Of course, aluminum, leather, and alcantara are a great match to get a dynamic impression. Both the 3-spoke steering wheel and shift paddles enhance that sporty look, even though the Tonale might not be a proper sports car.

Alfa Romeo’s purpose in the Tonale is not to give a raw, sporty car, but a great driving experience, and they brought new elements, such as a 12.3” cluster screen, and a fully customizable Android 10.25” touchscreen. Lastly, and this is great news, wireless Android Auto and Apple Car Play come as standard on the Tonale.
What are the Alfa Romeo Tonale engines?
The engine range is almost a 100% hybrid on the new SUV. Here is a list of all the available engines:
- Gasoline, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox
- 4-cylindre 1.5-liter, 130 hp Hybrid VGT (Variable-Geometry Turbo) engine
- 4-cylindre 1.5-liter, 160 hp Hybrid VGT (Variable-Geometry Turbo) engine
- 4-cylindre 1.3-liter, 275 hp Plug-in Hybrid MultiAir turbo Q4 (with a 15.5-kWh battery)
- Diesel, paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox
- 4-cylindre 1.6-liter, 130hp diesel engine
For the moment, the engine range is quite small, and there is little probability we will ever see the Giulia Quadrifoglio V6 engine in the Tonale.
What is the Alfa Romeo Tonale price?
The Biscione brand have not announced a price tag yet. However, we believe the Tonale price should be from $37,000 (€35,000). For the 275 hp Q4 trim, the price tag should rise up to $55,000 (€50,000).
A new horizon before full electrification
Before going full electric in 2027 — according to our accomplices from Motortrend —, Alfa Romeo demonstrates it is still a big actor in the automotive industry. The Tonale has almost everything to please mid-aged customers (and younger or older), except maybe a prestigious engine. On paper, numbers, and features look great. Only a test drive will tell if the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale can deal with the competition. In the meantime, we just have to wait for the price, and the exact release date (June 2022 in Europe – 2023 in the US).
