Unveiled at the Monterey Car Week, the second generation of the Mercedes-AMG GT arrives with ambitious intentions – aiming to unseat the Porsche 911 from its throne. However, much like its predecessor, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT is likely to encounter challenges in achieving this goal. Text: Luca W. © Images: Mercedes-AMG
However, Mercedes-AMG has chosen a different strategy, recognizing that in order to outperform Porsche, it’s more prudent to avoid direct competition (just like the AMG GT Black Series did). Consequently, their engineers have incorporated essential features that are either absent or limited in entry-level modern 911 models.
The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT now features 2+2 seats and AWD system
In contrast to its predecessor, the second generation of the AMG GT now offers an optional 2+2 seating arrangement, allowing owners to accommodate additional passengers on their AMG journeys. While it doesn’t transform into a saloon, it does embrace a more practical approach, making it a versatile daily sports car, akin to the 911’s versatility.

Furthermore, the standard AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system is now integrated across all trim levels. This system features fully variable torque distribution between the front and rear axles, ensuring optimal traction even in demanding conditions.
A clutch, controlled electromechanically, establishes variable connectivity between the constantly driven rear axle and the front axle. This enables continuous calculation of the most suitable torque distribution based on driving conditions and the driver’s preferences. The distribution can range from full rear-wheel drive to a balanced 50/50 split.

Adding to its repertoire, the AMG GT is equipped with rear-wheel steering (up to 2.5° angle), a pivotal feature that significantly influences the vehicle’s overall performance and handling dynamics.
Still the same recipe: a V8
It’s a delight to witness that the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT continues to be powered by a robust V8 engine.
Crafted meticulously under the famed “One man, one engine” principle, the latest AMG GT Coupé is entering the scene with two performance variations of the AMG 4.0‑litre V8 bi-turbo engine. This new 4.0-litre V8, equipped with twin-scroll turbochargers, boasts enhancements like a fresh oil pan, repositioned intercooler, and an active crankcase ventilation system.

In the apex model, the GT 63 4MATIC+, this engine cranks out a remarkable 585 HP and delivers a peak torque of 800 Nm. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in just 3.2 seconds, propelling the car to a top speed of 315 km/h.
In the GT 55 4MATIC+, the V8 powerplant generates an output of 476 HP and a maximum torque of 700 Nm. Accelerating from zero to 100 km/h takes a mere 3.9 seconds, while the car’s top speed reaches 295 km/h.

The power generated by these engines is seamlessly transmitted to the wheels via a 9-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission. This gearbox is paired with the engine through a wet starting clutch instead of the conventional torque converter, as seen in the first generation. This not only enhances responsiveness and overall performance but also contributes to weight reduction.
Full of AMG functions
The AMG GT Coupé employs multi-link suspensions on both front and rear axles, enhanced by the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with roll stabilization. Active hydraulic elements replace traditional anti-roll bars, swiftly adjusting for rolling movements, enhancing both comfort and driving dynamics. Hydraulically interconnected adaptive shock absorbers ensure a wide roll spring rate with reduced rolling.
This system bolsters comfort by compensating for uneven surfaces and minimizes body roll for precise cornering. A sophisticated hydraulic network interlinks dampers, heightening control. This hydraulic setup also powers the optional front axle lift system, raising the car by 30 mm to aid navigation in tight spaces, conveniently controlled via the central display or steering wheel buttons.

Lastly, the standard AMG TRACK PACE software captures over 80 vehicle-specific data points during route drives. The “Telemetry” screen displays up to 40 parameters, showcasing lap and sector times. The head-up display guides through corners and braking points, augmented reality reprises stored paths, refining driving techniques.
These functions undoubtedly enhance the overall performance of the new AMG GT. However, they also bring a substantial weight increase, pushing the second generation’s weight to 1,970 kg, an additional 300 kg compared to its predecessor.
2024 Mercedes-AMG GT price and units
Mercedes has yet to disclose the pricing details. However, based on Mercedes-AMG’s typical price range, we anticipate that the 2024 AMG-GT will commence at approximately $180,000 (£140,000 – €165,000 – CHF158,000).
