After years of speculation, the Porsche 911 is officially entering its hybrid era. This marks a significant historical shift, reminiscent of the transition to water-cooled engines, which was met with resistance from Porsche enthusiasts. The Porsche 911 Carrera GTS is now equipped with Porsche’s new T-hybrid system, delivering a combined output of 534 horsepower, surpassing even the GT3 RS.

Porsche new T-Hybrid system

The 2024 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS debuts the advanced T-Hybrid system, characterized by its only electric exhaust gas turbocharger, which incorporates an electric motor positioned between the compressor and turbine wheel. Just like the MGU-K in Formula 1. This motor swiftly accelerates the turbocharger, producing immediate boost pressure (reducing lag) and functioning as a generator to convert exhaust gas energy into 11 kW (15 HP) of electric power, recharging the high-voltage battery. This system replaces the need for dual turbochargers, offering a more dynamic and responsive power delivery.

The turbo completes a 3.6-litre flat-6 engine with an increased bore of 97 mm and stroke of 81 mm, raising the displacement by 0.6 liters over its predecessor. The engine features VarioCam camshaft control and rocker arm valve control, optimized even without electric assistance, it delivers 485 PS and 570 Nm of torque.

Integrated into the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) is a permanent magnet synchronous motor, providing up to 150 Nm of additional torque and a power boost of 40 kW (54 HP). The hybrid system uses a high-voltage battery, comparable in size and weight to a traditional 12-volt battery, storing 1.9 kWh of energy at 400V.

Overall, the T-Hybrid system delivers a combined output of 534 HP and 610 Nm (450 ft-lbs), improving performance while adding only 50 kg compared to its predecessor.

An updated design

More aggressive outside

The 2024 Carrera GTS features a revised suspension, now including standard rear-axle steering for increased stability and reduced turning circle. The Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) anti-roll system is integrated into the high-voltage system, allowing for more precise electro-hydraulic control. The sports suspension includes a variable damper system (PASM) and a 10 mm lower ride height.

The exterior design includes new model-specific bumpers, matrix LED headlights, and active cooling air flaps, that are honestly butters. Now back to being objective. The redesign includes adaptive front diffusers, a more aggressive rear end and exhaust systems. Also, the rear bumper and light strip now integrates the Porsche logo, while the trunk grill doesn’t keep its 9-2-9 fins (that recalled the 992 generation).

More digital inside

Porsche has designed the new 911 interior as a two-seater by default, with a 2+2 seat configuration available at no extra charge. The cockpit blends the classic 911 design with modern technology, emphasizing driver-focused controls. Key elements like the driving mode switch, driver assistance lever, and a start button are conveniently located around the steering wheel. The centre console includes a cooled compartment for smartphones with inductive charging.

Enhanced customizability of driving modes and driver assistance systems is provided, alongside new connectivity features, such as Apple CarPlay.
