Several weeks following the unveiling of the new Aston Martin DB12, the Aston Martin DB12 Volante counterpart makes its debut, complementing its Coupe sibling and elevating Aston Martin’s standards in elegance and refinement. However, a closer examination of the specifications reveals that the DB12 Volante aspires to carve a new category: the most powerful open-top “super tourer”, boasting an impressive 680 PS (671 HP). Keep the elegance, keep the performance
The removal of the roof undeniably impacts the overall rigidity of the vehicle, potentially compromising its dynamic capabilities during spirited driving. In response, Aston Martin’s engineers have undertaken significant enhancements to the already proficient DB12 aluminium structure. They’ve elevated the mounting points of all suspension attachments, notably amplifying the front axle’s stiffness by 140%.

Addressing this challenge, efforts were also directed towards bolstering the underbody’s rigidity, a customary consideration for convertible variants. An additional engine cross brace has been introduced, elevating torsional stiffness by 3.7% and effectively reducing the dynamic disparity between the DB12 and the DB12 Volante. The chassis reinforcement, along with the roof mechanical system, contributes to an added weight of 111 kg compared to the Coupe variant, resulting in a total weight of 1,796 kg for the DB12 Volante.

However, these refinements extend beyond sheer performance, encompassing customer-oriented factors such as comfort. The introduction of new adaptive dampers signifies a remarkable 500% expansion in force distribution bandwidth compared to previous-generation hardware. This enhancement provides the Aston Martin DB12 Volante with swifter response times, catering to both comfort and performance demands. Another instance of enhanced comfort pertains to aerodynamic noise reduction. The convertible’s roof canopy incorporates a robust 8-layer insulation, meticulously designed to maintain cabin serenity even amidst open-air motoring.
Silent, really?
Aston Martin remains steadfast in its allegiance to its heritage, proudly retaining the V12 engine. Alas, (really?), this allegiance comes at a cost to absolute silent and serenity in the DB12 Volante. Beneath its elegant hood rests a potent 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, delivering an impressive 680 PS and a robust 800 Nm of torque. This formidable Mercedes-AMG derived power plant propels the car from 0 to 100 kph in a mere 3.6 seconds, granting it an exhilarating top speed of 325 kph.

Volante possesses all the Super Tourer traits so successfully introduced in the DB12 Coupe. That we have preserved this class-leading performance and handling is testament to the underlying brilliance of the DB12 platform and the work we have done to maintain the advantage of its superb powertrain and chassis in an open-top version. No longer the ‘softer’ option, DB12 Volante offers the stimulation of a true sports car with the unique pleasure and satisfaction that only a convertible Aston Martin can deliver.

In 2023, the presence of a V12 engine is a distinguished privilege that demands the discerning awareness of any customer. A privilege that reveals itself in just 13 seconds, as the K-roof gracefully unfurls, allowing one’s ears to indulge in the captivating symphony of harmonics that emanate from within.
The DB12 Volante is undoubtably the most beautiful convertible of the year
In an era of new design paradigms, where the organic lines have sometimes yielded to different stylistic directions (hello BMW), Aston Martin emerges as a beacon of understanding when it comes to the essence of elegance. The Aston Martin DB12 Volante embodies a captivating allure, reminiscent of a femme fatale without the tragic element. Its essence radiates an exquisite elegance, skilfully capturing and reflecting light with each curvature and contour.

Even in stillness, the car exudes a sense of dynamic movement. The sides unveil elegantly arched fenders that seamlessly merge into the fluid roofline, evoking a feeling of grace and agility. The attention to detail is apparent in every facet, harmoniously showcasing an expression of understated opulence – a design that not only demands reverence but also resonates with refined taste. For this, thank you, Aston Martin.
