The BMW Z8 Coupé never existed. But the BMW Z07 Concept was revealed in 1997 in the Tokyo Motor Show, as a tribute to the original BMW 507 50th birthday. This concept car, declined in 2 trims (Coupé and Roadster) was so successful that BMW commercialized it under the famous BMW Z8, a roadster.

BMW Z8’s history concise overview

The latter stole the show of the Z07 Coupé, as the Z8 became an incredible success, even today in the collector market, seeing its price ($200,000 in average). But BMW somehow decided to commercialize the Z8 without a roof, in the opposite of the Z3 and Z4 trims. That is, somehow, one of the biggest car enthusiast regrets, looking at the Z07 Coupé astounding style, revealed later in Detroit.

The BMW Z8’s overall design closely mirrors the concept, with the Coupe version, featuring a Zagato-inspired double bubble roof, presenting a truly distinctive appearance. Could it have matched the success of the Roadster version? Certainly, given that 5,703 BMW Z8 units were sold. Utilizing the same foundation as the E39 BMW M5 (equipped with the S62 engine), the Z8 Coupe could have enriched the exclusive range of the Z8 and become a highly sought-after collector’s car.

Fantasy fulfilled

Championing the spirit of innovation, Smit Vehicle Engineering, a Californian company established by two brothers, one of whom honed their skills at Singer, embarked on a unique venture. Their endeavour involved taking an E86 BMW Z4, infusing it with the power of an E92 BMW M3 V8 engine, and enveloping it in the evocative bodywork reminiscent of the BMW Z8. The result is the extraordinary Smit Oletha, a modern interpretation of the BMW Z8 Coupé.

Crafted with simplicity and precision, the Smit Oletha pays homage to the classic lines of the BMW Z8. Notably, the design features an integrated mobile rear wing, echoing the iconic elements of its inspiration. The carbon fibre composite bodywork not only enhances aesthetics but also contributes to a reduced weight of 1480 kg. The Z4’s foundation is stretched by 260 mm (10.23”), further accentuating the Oletha’s distinctive presence.

The Smit Oletha has a better engine

Underneath the hood, the heart of the Smit Oletha beats with the vigor of the E92 BMW M3 engine, the S65. This power plant, a modified 4.4-litre variant (compared to the M3’s 4.2-litre), is naturally aspirated and boasts a redline of 8,500 RPM, slightly lower than the M3’s 9,000 RPM. The S65 engine propels the Oletha with an impressive power output of 450 HP, a bump from the M3’s 414 HP.

Enhancing the auditory symphony, the engine is equipped with a new carbon intake, featuring 8 throttle valves, and a stainless/inconel exhaust. This configuration ensures that the Oletha produces a distinctive sound that rivals, if not surpasses, the official Z8 or M3. The driving experience is finely tuned with a 6-gear manual gearbox, a limited-slip differential, and adaptable suspensions, delivering a collection of performance elements that enthusiasts crave.

The Oletha, being a handcrafted marvel, comes in limited numbers, adding an extra layer of exclusivity.

Initial estimates suggest a price tag of around $450,000 (EUR412,000 — £358,500 — CHF397,500). This bespoke creation not only embodies exceptional craftsmanship but also offers a unique driving experience for discerning enthusiasts.
